ECB Monetary Policy Accounts
A delayed summary of the discussion and reasoning behind the ECB Governing Council's monetary policy decisions.
Full explanation
ECB Monetary Policy Accounts are the European Central Bank's summary of the discussion behind a recent monetary policy decision. They explain how the Governing Council assessed inflation, economic activity, financial conditions and the balance of risks before reaching its decision. The accounts also outline policy options considered and the rationale for the decision, and are normally published around four weeks after a monetary policy meeting. They are not a new interest-rate decision.
Why traders watch it
Traders use the accounts to assess whether policymakers' discussion appeared more concerned about inflation, growth, or financial conditions than was apparent on decision day. The detail can alter expectations for the future path of ECB policy, affecting the euro and euro-area interest-rate markets.
Market interpretation
- EUR pairs
- May affect the euro by changing expectations for future ECB interest-rate policy.
- Euro-area government bonds and interest-rate markets
- May influence expected policy-rate paths and yields, particularly at shorter maturities.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
Language that suggests broader concern about persistent inflation or a need for tighter policy could be interpreted as relatively supportive of higher expected policy rates. Greater emphasis on weak activity, easing inflation pressures, or downside risks could instead be interpreted as consistent with lower expected policy rates. Market reactions depend on how the account compares with existing expectations and the ECB's earlier communication.
Typical volatility
Moderate. The account describes a meeting that has already taken place, so its information may already be partly reflected in prices. It is a summary rather than a verbatim transcript, and subsequent data or ECB communications can change the policy outlook.
Trading considerations
- Compare the account with the ECB's original policy statement and press-conference messaging from the same meeting.
- Assess whether the discussion changes market-implied expectations for future ECB policy rather than focusing on isolated phrases.
- Expect liquidity and spreads to vary around scheduled central-bank communications.
- Consider intervening euro-area inflation, activity and wage data, which may have changed the outlook since the meeting covered by the account.
