Norges Bank Interest Rate Decision
The Norges Bank Interest Rate Decision announces whether Norway’s central bank has changed or held its policy rate.
Full explanation
The Norges Bank Interest Rate Decision is Norway’s scheduled monetary-policy announcement. It tells markets whether Norges Bank has changed or held its policy rate, the central bank’s key tool for influencing borrowing costs, inflation and economic activity. The decision is made by Norges Bank’s Monetary Policy and Financial Stability Committee, which normally decides on the policy rate eight times a year. The announcement is often accompanied by a statement, and some meetings include updated forecasts or a Monetary Policy Report.
Why traders watch it
Traders watch the decision because unexpected changes in the policy rate or in Norges Bank’s guidance can affect Norwegian krone interest-rate expectations, government-bond yields, swaps and NOK’s relative yield appeal.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected policy rate, or language that emphasises inflation risks, may be interpreted as a tighter-than-expected policy signal. A lower-than-expected policy rate, or communication that gives more weight to weak activity or easing inflation pressures, may be interpreted as a looser-than-expected signal.
Typical volatility
High. Not every meeting includes new forecasts, so the policy statement and any press conference can matter as much as the rate level. Oil prices, the krone exchange rate, inflation data and labour-market conditions can all affect interpretation.
