United States Treasury 6-Week Bill Auction

This event reports the results of a U.S. Treasury auction for very short-term government bills that mature in about six weeks. The most watched figure is usually the auction yield or rate at which the bills were sold.

Economic Events

Full explanation

Treasury bills are marketable U.S. government securities sold through public auction and issued at a discount to face value. The 6-week bill is a regular short-dated bill tenor, and auction results can include the high rate, investment rate, bid-to-cover ratio and bidder categories. It should not be merged with other bill tenors such as 4-week, 8-week, 13-week or 26-week auctions.

Why traders watch it

Short-bill auctions help traders gauge front-end Treasury demand, money-market conditions and expectations around near-term policy rates.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A higher-than-expected auction rate may suggest weaker demand or higher front-end yield pressure. A lower-than-expected rate or strong bid metrics may suggest firmer demand for short-term Treasuries.
