United States Advance International Trade in Goods Balance
The U.S. Advance Goods Trade Balance shows the difference between the value of goods the United States exports and imports for a month. A negative number means the country imported more goods than it exported.
Full explanation
This release is part of the Census Bureau’s Advance Economic Indicators report and covers goods only, not services. It provides an early Census-basis estimate of goods exports, goods imports and the resulting balance before the fuller trade report is published. The figures are generally seasonally adjusted and are used as an early input for GDP tracking.
Why traders watch it
Traders watch it because trade flows can affect GDP expectations, dollar sentiment and Treasury-rate views, especially when the deficit differs meaningfully from forecasts.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A smaller-than-expected deficit may point to firmer net exports as a possible support for growth expectations. A larger-than-expected deficit may suggest net trade could weigh more on GDP, though the market reaction can depend on import strength, export strength and broader risk sentiment.
