S&P Cotality Case-Shiller Home Price Indices
The S&P/Case-Shiller Home Price Index tracks changes in U.S. home prices. It is widely followed as a measure of whether residential real estate prices are rising or falling nationally and in major cities.
Overview
The S&P Cotality Case-Shiller series uses a repeat-sales approach to measure price changes for existing single-family homes, including national and major-city composite indexes. MoM and YoY calendar rows describe monthly or annual changes in the same index family. The series is published monthly with a lag, so a July release typically refers to earlier housing transactions rather than current-month sales.
Why traders watch it
Traders watch it for signals about U.S. housing momentum, household balance sheets, mortgage-market conditions and potential spillovers into inflation and Fed expectations.
How to interpret the result
A stronger-than-expected reading may suggest resilient housing demand or limited supply, while a weaker-than-expected reading may suggest softer housing conditions. Market sensitivity can depend on whether the data changes the broader growth, inflation or rates narrative.
