Tradable structure

A chart clear enough to trade from: obvious highs and lows, a level worth watching and a stop loss with somewhere logical to sit.

Full explanation

Tradable structure means the chart is giving you something to work with. There are visible highs and lows, price is respecting an area rather than wandering through it, and you can point at the level your idea depends on.

The opposite is unstructured or "choppy" price: overlapping candles, no level holding for long, and every move reversing before it goes anywhere. The market is still moving, but there is nothing to build a plan around.

Structure is what a stop loss hangs from. If you cannot say "this idea is wrong below that low", there is no structure yet — only movement.

Why traders watch it

Whether structure exists decides if there is a trade at all. Trading Windows describe conditions as clean or unclear precisely so you can tell the difference between an opportunity and noise.

Trading considerations

  • Ask whether you can name the level your trade depends on. If not, wait.
  • Clean structure gives a logical stop; choppy price forces an arbitrary one.
  • Structure usually improves once a major session has been open for a while.
  • No structure is a valid reason to do nothing all day.
