Moving averages, trend-following crossovers and most volatility bands are lagging: they are built from data that has already printed, so they describe what has happened.
The trade-off is reliability. A lagging tool will not call the turn, but it is far less likely to have you fighting a trend that is still running.
They work best as context and as filters — is the market trending, and in which direction — rather than as triggers.

Lagging tools give you a stable read on condition and direction, which is exactly what a filter needs to do.
