Botswana Inflation Rate MoM
Botswana’s month-over-month inflation rate tracks the monthly change in consumer prices using the national Consumer Price Index.
Full explanation
Botswana Inflation Rate MoM measures how much consumer prices changed from one month to the next. It is based on the Consumer Price Index, which tracks the cost of a basket of goods and services bought by households in Botswana. Statistics Botswana publishes CPI and national inflation data under its prices statistics programme, using a December 2018 base period and a modified Laspeyres index methodology. The 2026-08-14 calendar occurrence aligns with Statistics Botswana’s scheduled release of the July 2026 Consumer Price Index.
Why traders watch it
Traders watch Botswana inflation because it can affect expectations for Bank of Botswana policy, local interest rates, real yields and the value of the Botswana pula. Month-over-month data can be useful for spotting near-term price pressure before it is fully reflected in annual inflation rates.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected monthly inflation reading may suggest firmer near-term price pressure and could raise expectations that policy will remain tighter for longer. A lower-than-expected reading may suggest easing price pressure, although markets often compare it with annual inflation, administered-price changes, food and fuel prices, and central-bank guidance.
Typical volatility
Moderate. Monthly CPI changes can be volatile, especially when fuel, food, utilities or administered prices move sharply. A single monthly reading should be interpreted alongside year-over-year inflation, prior revisions, base effects and the Bank of Botswana’s inflation objective.
