Full explanation

Bulgaria’s current account records the country’s transactions with the rest of the world in goods, services, income and transfers. It shows whether these flows produced a surplus or a deficit over the reporting period. The Bulgarian National Bank publishes the measure as part of Bulgaria’s balance-of-payments statistics, using the IMF’s BPM6 framework and reporting values in euros. It is broader than the trade balance because it also includes cross-border services, investment income and transfers.

Why traders watch it

The release helps traders assess Bulgaria’s external position, cross-border currency flows and potential reliance on foreign financing. It can also inform views on country risk and the broader external backdrop for the euro-area-linked Bulgarian economy.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A larger-than-expected surplus, or a smaller-than-expected deficit, could possibly be viewed as evidence of a stronger external flow position. A smaller surplus or wider deficit could possibly increase attention on financing needs and changes in trade, income or transfer flows.

Typical volatility

Moderate. Current-account figures can be revised and may move because of seasonal tourism, energy imports, investment-income payments or one-off transfers. A single monthly result should be considered alongside the trade, services and financial-account details.
