CBI Industrial Trends Orders
A monthly CBI survey indicator showing whether UK manufacturers' total order books are above or below normal.
Full explanation
CBI Industrial Trends Orders is a monthly survey measure of whether UK manufacturers consider their total order books to be above or below normal. It is reported as a weighted net balance: the difference between the share of firms reporting above-normal order books and the share reporting below-normal order books. The measure covers manufacturers' total orders, rather than export orders alone, and provides a timely indication of demand conditions in the industrial sector. A negative reading means more respondents describe order books as below normal than above normal.
Why traders watch it
It offers an early, survey-based read on UK manufacturing demand and business conditions. Sterling and UK rate markets may react when the result materially changes perceptions of activity, growth momentum or pricing pressure.
Market interpretation
- GBP pairs
- Can influence sterling when it materially alters views on UK growth or business conditions, particularly during a broader data-driven repricing.
- UK interest-rate markets
- May be considered alongside other activity and price surveys when assessing the economic backdrop for monetary policy.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A higher-than-expected balance may be interpreted as a sign that manufacturing demand is holding up better than anticipated, while a lower-than-expected balance may be interpreted as softer order-book conditions. Market responses can also depend on the survey's output, export-orders and price-expectations components.
A higher balance means that, on net, more manufacturers report total order books above normal. This may be read as firmer manufacturing demand than expected.
A lower balance means that, on net, more manufacturers report total order books below normal. This may be read as weaker manufacturing demand than expected.
Higher readings indicate relatively stronger order-book conditions; lower readings indicate relatively weaker conditions.
Typical volatility
Moderate. This is a diffusion-style survey balance, not a measure of the cash value or volume of all UK factory orders. Manufacturing is only one part of the UK economy, and individual monthly results can be volatile or revised in context by later surveys.
Trading considerations
- Compare the outcome with consensus and the previous reading, rather than treating the sign of the balance in isolation.
- Check the accompanying output, export order books, stock adequacy and selling-price expectations measures for confirmation or divergence.
- Allow for potentially thinner liquidity and wider spreads around clustered UK data releases.
- Distinguish this survey measure from official UK manufacturing output and factory-orders data, which use different coverage and methods.
