Core PCE Prices QoQ
A quarterly measure of underlying US consumer-price inflation that excludes food and energy.
Full explanation
Core PCE Prices QoQ measures the change in prices paid for consumer goods and services in the United States, excluding food and energy, compared with the previous quarter. Removing food and energy aims to make the underlying inflation trend easier to assess because those categories can be unusually volatile. The quarterly measure is published within the Bureau of Economic Analysis GDP accounts and is commonly reported as a quarterly annualized rate of change.
Why traders watch it
It is a widely followed gauge of underlying US inflation and can affect expectations for Federal Reserve policy, US interest rates and the US dollar.
Market interpretation
- USD
- Surprises versus expectations can alter views on the inflation and monetary-policy outlook.
- US government bonds
- The result can influence expectations for future policy rates and yields, particularly when it differs materially from forecasts.
- US equity index futures
- The release may affect discount-rate and growth expectations alongside the accompanying GDP information.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A reading above expectations may be interpreted as evidence of firmer underlying inflation, while a reading below expectations may be interpreted as softer underlying inflation. Market reactions can also depend on the GDP release, revisions and the wider policy outlook.
A higher-than-expected reading may be seen as firmer underlying inflation and can prompt reassessment of the expected monetary-policy path.
A lower-than-expected reading may be seen as softer underlying inflation and can prompt reassessment of the expected monetary-policy path.
Higher readings can indicate firmer underlying inflation; lower readings can indicate softer underlying inflation, relative to expectations.
Typical volatility
High. This is a core measure rather than headline consumer-price inflation, excludes food and energy, and quarterly figures may be revised as GDP and national accounts estimates are updated.
Trading considerations
- Compare the result with the market consensus and prior estimate rather than viewing the headline number in isolation.
- Check whether the release includes revisions to earlier quarterly data or other GDP components.
- Distinguish this quarterly core PCE measure from the monthly core PCE inflation release.
- Expect liquidity and spreads to change around the scheduled US data release, especially when it coincides with a GDP estimate.
