Full explanation

Germany Wholesale Prices MoM tracks how prices charged by wholesalers changed from the previous month. It is an upstream price indicator: it looks at goods sold in wholesale trade before many of those goods reach retailers or business users. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) publishes the index of wholesale selling prices, covering representative goods sold by domestic wholesale enterprises. The month-over-month rate shows the short-term change in the overall wholesale price index and can be influenced by energy, raw materials and other traded-goods prices.

Why traders watch it

Traders watch it as an early signal of German and euro-area inflation pressure. A surprise can affect expectations for consumer inflation, European Central Bank policy pricing, euro rates and EUR crosses, although it is usually less market-moving than CPI/HICP or ECB decisions.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A higher-than-expected reading may suggest firmer upstream price pressures that could feed into consumer or producer prices. A lower-than-expected reading may suggest easing pipeline inflation or weaker pricing power in wholesale trade.

Typical volatility

Moderate. Wholesale prices are not the same as consumer prices, and pass-through to CPI can be incomplete or delayed. Monthly moves can be noisy, especially when energy, commodities or exchange-rate-sensitive import goods move sharply, and the original index is not seasonally adjusted.
