Full explanation

Ifo Business Expectations measures how surveyed German businesses expect their conditions to develop over the next six months. It is the forward-looking component of the monthly ifo Business Climate Index, alongside businesses’ assessment of their current situation. The ifo Institute converts the survey responses into a seasonally adjusted index with 2015=100.

Why traders watch it

Germany is the euro area’s largest economy, so this timely business-confidence measure can shape views on the region’s growth outlook, corporate activity and the policy environment relevant to EUR and European interest-rate markets.

Market interpretation

EUR pairs
Can affect perceptions of German and euro-area growth prospects, particularly when the result differs materially from expectations.
European government bonds and interest-rate markets
May influence views on the economic backdrop relevant to expected policy settings.
European equities
Can contribute to sentiment toward cyclical sectors and companies exposed to German demand.

Stronger vs weaker outcomes

A reading above expectations or a rise from the prior month may be interpreted as a sign that firms are becoming less pessimistic or more optimistic about near-term conditions. A weaker-than-expected reading may be interpreted as evidence of softer business confidence. Market reaction can also depend on the current-situation component and the overall Ifo Business Climate Index.

Stronger than expected

A higher reading, or one above consensus expectations, may indicate that surveyed firms see a more favorable outlook for the next six months.

Weaker than expected

A lower reading, or one below consensus expectations, may indicate that surveyed firms see a less favorable outlook for the next six months.

In line with expectations

Higher readings may point to firmer business expectations, while lower readings may point to weaker confidence about the next six months.

Typical volatility

Moderate. It is a sentiment survey rather than a direct measure of output, employment or spending. Responses can be influenced by temporary uncertainty, and the expectations component should be considered with the current-situation measure and other German and euro-area indicators.

Trading considerations

  • Compare the result with the market consensus and the prior month’s revised reading.
  • Review the accompanying Ifo Business Situation and headline Ifo Business Climate Index rather than assessing the expectations component alone.
  • Watch for differences across sectors, especially manufacturing, construction, trade and services.
  • Allow for wider spreads and fast initial price moves around a material surprise, particularly when the release coincides with other euro-area news.
