Mexico Global Indicator of Economic Activity YoY
A monthly INEGI indicator that tracks broad short-term changes in Mexico’s real economic activity.
Full explanation
Mexico’s Global Indicator of Economic Activity (IGAE) is a monthly measure of changes in the country’s real economic activity. The year-on-year reading compares activity in a given month with the same month a year earlier. Compiled by Mexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), it provides a timely, broad view of short-term conditions across major areas of the economy. It is a partial indicator rather than the quarterly GDP estimate, and the release can include preliminary figures.
Why traders watch it
The release offers a timely signal on the momentum of Mexico’s economy before more comprehensive GDP data are available. It can influence expectations for inflation, monetary policy and domestic demand, which may affect MXN and Mexican interest-rate markets.
Market interpretation
- MXN
- Unexpected changes in economic momentum can alter views on Mexico’s growth and monetary-policy outlook.
- Mexican interest-rate markets
- The result can affect expectations for future policy settings and the path of domestic economic demand.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A year-on-year result above expectations may be interpreted as evidence of firmer economic momentum, while a result below expectations may be interpreted as softer momentum. The market response can also depend on the sector breakdown, revisions and the wider outlook for Banco de México policy.
A higher-than-expected annual increase may be viewed as a sign of stronger-than-expected activity, subject to the sector detail and revisions.
A lower-than-expected annual increase may be viewed as a sign of weaker-than-expected activity, subject to base effects and other indicators.
Higher readings indicate faster year-on-year growth in the measured activity; lower readings indicate slower growth or a larger decline than a year earlier.
Typical volatility
Moderate. The annual comparison can be affected by base effects, calendar effects and revisions. Traders may also distinguish between the headline annual rate and seasonally adjusted month-on-month changes.
Trading considerations
- Compare the result with the market consensus and prior reading rather than viewing the annual percentage in isolation.
- Check whether INEGI revised earlier months or labelled the release as preliminary.
- Review the sector composition and the seasonally adjusted monthly change alongside the year-on-year figure.
- Consider the release alongside inflation, labour-market data, GDP estimates and Banco de México communications.
- Allow for potentially wider spreads and faster price changes around the scheduled publication time.
