U.S. Export Prices MoM
The U.S. Export Price Index month-over-month change tracks monthly movements in prices for U.S. exports and helps traders assess traded-goods inflation pressure.
Full explanation
U.S. Export Prices MoM measures how much the prices of goods and services sold abroad by the United States changed from the previous month. It is a trade-price inflation gauge: it tracks prices, not the physical volume or dollar value of exports. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the Import and Export Price Indexes monthly through its International Price Program, covering nonmilitary goods and services traded between the United States and the rest of the world. Economic calendars usually show the headline monthly percentage change for export prices.
Why traders watch it
Traders watch it as a secondary U.S. inflation and trade-pricing indicator. It can add context to CPI, PPI, the trade balance, terms of trade, and expectations for Federal Reserve policy, especially when global commodity or exchange-rate moves are influencing traded-goods prices.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A stronger-than-expected reading may suggest firmer external price pressures or better nominal pricing power for U.S. exporters, with possible implications for inflation expectations and rates. A weaker-than-expected reading may suggest softer traded-goods price pressure or less support from export pricing, although the impact depends on the details and the broader macro backdrop.
Typical volatility
Moderate. The release is usually less market-moving than CPI, PPI, payrolls, or Fed decisions. Commodity prices, exchange rates, industry mix, revisions, and whether the move is concentrated in agricultural or nonagricultural exports can all affect interpretation.
