UK Business Investment
UK Business Investment QoQ tracks the quarterly change in business spending on non-financial assets and is a component of investment in the national accounts.
Full explanation
UK Business Investment measures how much UK businesses spend on non-financial assets such as buildings, machinery, equipment and intellectual property. It is a quarterly Office for National Statistics release and is part of gross fixed capital formation in the expenditure approach to GDP. The quarter-on-quarter version shows the percentage change from the previous quarter, typically in seasonally adjusted, chained-volume terms so that price effects and usual seasonal patterns are reduced.
Why traders watch it
Traders watch UK business investment as a signal of corporate confidence, productive capacity and future growth momentum. A material surprise can influence expectations for UK GDP, Bank of England policy, gilt yields and GBP.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A stronger-than-expected reading may suggest firmer business confidence and investment-led growth, which could support GBP or UK yields if it changes policy expectations. A weaker-than-expected reading may point to caution among firms or softer demand, though the market reaction depends on the broader GDP mix, inflation backdrop and risk sentiment.
Typical volatility
Moderate. Business investment can be volatile because large projects, aircraft, energy assets or intellectual-property spending may move the series sharply. Early estimates are subject to revision as survey responses and national accounts data are updated, so traders usually compare the release with GDP, production and business survey indicators.
