UK GDP 3-Month Average
The UK GDP 3-Month Average is a rolling measure of real economic growth over the latest three months compared with the previous three months.
Full explanation
UK GDP 3-Month Average measures how much the UK economy grew or shrank over the latest three-month period compared with the previous three-month period. GDP is the broad value of goods and services produced in the economy, so this release gives a smoother view of activity than a single monthly change. The Office for National Statistics publishes it as part of the monthly GDP estimate, using real output measures across services, production and construction. Because it is a rolling three-month measure, it can reduce monthly noise but may still be revised as fuller source data arrive.
Why traders watch it
Traders watch this measure because it can influence expectations for Bank of England policy, gilt yields, sterling and UK equity sentiment by changing the market’s view of underlying growth momentum.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A stronger-than-expected reading could possibly suggest firmer underlying activity and reduce concern about near-term economic weakness. A weaker-than-expected reading could possibly point to softer demand or sector weakness and may affect expectations for rates and fiscal conditions.
Typical volatility
Moderate. The three-month average smooths monthly volatility but can lag turning points. Revisions, sector composition and the companion monthly and quarterly GDP estimates can change how markets interpret the headline number.
