Michigan Consumer Sentiment
A monthly U.S. household survey that tracks consumers’ views of their finances, the economy and buying conditions.
Full explanation
Michigan Consumer Sentiment is a monthly measure of how U.S. households feel about their finances, business conditions and buying conditions. It is produced from the University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers and is designed to capture attitudes that may influence saving and spending decisions. The survey includes questions on current conditions and expectations, including views on personal finances, the economy, inflation, unemployment and interest rates. Preliminary results are typically released in the middle of the month, with final results near month-end.
Why traders watch it
Traders watch it because consumer attitudes can shape expectations for U.S. household spending, inflation expectations and the broader growth outlook. Large surprises may affect USD, Treasury yields and equity-index sentiment, especially when the inflation-expectations details move at the same time.
Stronger vs weaker outcomes
A stronger-than-expected reading may suggest households are more confident and potentially more willing to spend, which could support a firmer growth outlook. A weaker-than-expected reading may point to caution among consumers, particularly if the expectations component or inflation-expectations details deteriorate.
Typical volatility
Moderate. Sentiment is a survey measure, not a direct spending measure, and it can be influenced by news, politics, fuel prices and financial-market conditions. Preliminary readings can be revised in the final release, and markets often look beyond the headline to current conditions, expectations and inflation-expectations components.
