Puerto Rico: real GDP rises in 2023 on export strength; consumption and investment also up

Broadly neutralMedium—useful macro structure, but Puerto Rico is not a separate currency economy for FX rates.

BEA reports Puerto Rico’s real GDP increased 3.0% in 2023 after a 2.1% fall in 2022. The BEA notes the main driver was higher exports, with personal consumption expenditures, government spending and private fixed investment also increasing, partly offset by lower private inventory investment. Imports rose (and therefore subtracted from GDP).

Why this matters for FX

A sub-national economy, but the breakdown (exports leading, domestic demand components contributing, offset from inventories, and imports rising) helps explain how growth is being generated—useful for understanding demand channels and external sector momentum that can feed into USD-linked economic narratives for investors.
